Talk:Setting Up a Shard

server.ini

Is it really necessary to put both of these lines into the server.ini?

Server.Gate.Host "123.45.67.89"
Server.Auth.Host "123.45.67.89"

If yes, this is a bug - the client should query the auth server from the gateway. Dirtsand always supported this, and I patched the client months ago to perform this query if there is no auth server specified in server.ini. Cyan's gateway does not support such a query, but that's okay since the server.ini for MOULa contains the auth server IP.

I can confirm this works for DIRTSAND at least. I'll be removing it from my CWE:Getting Started guide then (well, adding an optional statement). By the way, you don't mind if I delete this article? Its content has been replaced and updated by DIRTSAND:Getting Started, which also replaces Development:DIRTSAND. --Lyrositor 18:39, 15 May 2012 (EDT)
The emphasis of this article was the minimal amount of configuration needed to get a Shard running - without any dataserver or encryption. I don't see this on DIRTSAND:Getting Started. Parts of this tutorial I found in CWE:Getting Started, so the section on setting up the CWE probably can be shortened, and the part about adding the Dirtsand user. However, the CWE guide also says you need to set up encryption in the server.ini, which is overkill for a local development Shard. I'm not touching anything for now since I am unsure which plans you have, or if you decide that nobody will be interested in such a minimal setup guide. --Diafero 12:23, 16 May 2012 (EDT)
OK, I see your point. So here are my plans: 1. Specify clearly on DIRTSAND:Getting Started that the full File Server step is optional. 2. Add a subsection in File Server telling how to get your desired minimal setup (using touch and so on). 3. Specify that keygen isn't required in that section. 4. Specify that the server.ini encryption keys are optional. 5. Make "Setting Up a Shard" point to those two articles whilst specifying that some steps are optional beforehand. I think this should cover everything. What do you think? --Lyrositor 17:22, 16 May 2012 (EDT)
That sounds approximately like what I had in mind. Maybe "Setting up a minimal Shard" would be a more appropriate name. Then all it has to contain is "Look here and here, and make sure to use the setup without keys and fileserver". -- Diafero 05:34, 17 May 2012 (EDT)
Could that be a subsection under this article? You'd have "Minimal Shard Setup" and "Full Shard Setup". I'm trying to compact information to make it more accessible, and since the two subjects are extremely linked to each other... --Lyrositor 07:13, 17 May 2012 (EDT)
Sure, if they are really so close that should work out. (and sorry for replying so late, I somehow missed this... I think^^) -- Diafero 08:20, 15 June 2012 (EDT)
